The Monday Victory Bell

On June 11, 2012 by Chris Holloway

Good morning and welcome to this fully operational battlestation. The launch of Buckeye Empire is the culmination of literally days of discussion and hard work. We may not be the prettiest blog at the dance, but we are the newest. What we aim to do here is to provide you, the readers, with a different kind of Ohio State site. Sure, there will be all the usual types of articles such as this one, as well as game previews and recaps along with random commentary and analysis.

But, if you hop over to The Dark Side of the O, you’ll find the seedy underbelly of the Empire. Staffed by Ryan Lephart and Joe Reinhard, The Dark Side is your spot to go when you need to escape the rigors of the main page and just kick back to watch videos of cats playing pianos while BASE jumping from the tailgate of a 1999 Ford F-150.

The Victory Bell serves as your daily dose of Ohio State news condensed for your pleasure.

Let’s ring the bell.

Leslie Wexner Steps Down From The OSU Board of Trustees

Longtime Trustee Les Wexner, CEO of Limited Brands has stepped down from his post on the Ohio State Board of Trustees. Wexner, a 1959 Graduate of Ohio State, has held his post as Trustee during two different stints since 1988. All told, Mr. Wexner spent 18 years on the Board. He has been replaced in the interim by Alex Shumate by Governor Kasich.

OSU President Gee had nothing but praise for the work that Mr. Wexner put in, taking the opportunity to say:

“Les Wexner has provided extraordinary leadership to the university during times of significant change and progress, and we are grateful for his service.”

Wexner was a fixture upon the board, presiding over some of the University’s greatest moments as well as some of its biggest scandals. We at the Empire wish Mr. Wexner long years, good health, and great success in all future endeavors.

Stoneburner and Mewhort Plead Not Guilty

Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort, as most of you   know, were arrested by Shawnee Police after they allegedly urinated on a day care and took off running when approached by police officers. The two starters entered their plea in the case via fax on Friday, according to their lawyer, Mark Collins. Apparently, in college football, all sensitive and important documentation is sent via fax. Which is understandable, considering telegraphs are considered an impermissible benefit.

OH, Just Another National Championship

Christina Manning continued her season long hot streak in the 100m hurdles, this time taking the National Title with a time of 12.89 seconds, which is just unfairly fast. The All-American couldn’t have asked for a sweeter end to her career as a Buckeye. Manning joins elite company as only the second athlete in school history to win an outdoor championship. Coincidentally, that was also in the 100m hurdles, back in 2001 by Donica Merriman.

Ladies Dig The Pigskin

Coach Urban Meyer, along with his staff, hosted the first annual Women’s Clinic held at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. In excess of 700 Lady Buckeyes showed up to learn the fundamentals from some of the greatest to ever coach the game. What is even more spectacular is that the event raised much needed cash for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, an extremely worthy organization.

We’ll have more on this clinic later in the week as we debrief the mole we had inside. Keep your eyes peeled for an inside look at what promises to be a successful yearly event.
