The Wednesday Victory Bell

The Victory Bell

Ahhh, Hump Day. Halfway to the weekend. Ring the bell, cubicle jockeys, you’ve made it this far. Today’s Victory Bell is an exercise in what you can accomplish when you set your mind to a task. Just as these Buckeyes achieved greatness in one way or another, so shall this Empire.

As Grant reminded us yesterday, The Victory Bell is a time honored tradition. Rung after each home victory by the esteemed members of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, the Victory Bell is a constant reminder of the dominance of Ohio State football as it peers down upon the field at Ohio Stadium from high atop its perch. Exactly 21,169 days since the first time the bell was rung, it will have yet another chance to ring in glorious celebration over the Golden Bears of Cal as they invade the Horseshoe in the premier non-conference game of the upcoming season. (Sorry UAB)

Ring the damn bell.

Amanda Furrer is an Olympian

The Junior will be headed to London this summer to represent her country in the 50m Three Position competition. Furrer trades her Scarlet and Gray for the Red, White, and Blue after narrowly making the team at the Trials in Fort Benning, GA. After building a commanding lead, Amanda struggled before finally putting away the competition with a score of 196 in the kneeling position.

The very model of consistency, a trait absolutely crucial to a sharpshooter, Furrer has placed in the top 10 nationally in each of her three seasons at Ohio State. Buckeye Empire, as well as all of Buckeye Nation wish Amanda the best of luck as she goes for the gold.

Manning Wins More Honors

No, we haven’t preemptively given our MVP vote to either Peyton or Eli. We’re once again talking about All-Everything sprinter/hurdler Christina Manning, she of the national titles in 60m indoor and 100m outdoor hurdles. Manning is once again collecting hardware for her own personal trophy case, this time being named the Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year.

Manning set school record after school record during her tenure as a Buckeye, and a grateful Empire appreciates her service and wishes her well in all her future endeavors.

Next step? The Suzy Favor Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year Award. All we’re saying is that a full set would look awful nice.

Scholar Athletes

Amongst the more than 10,000 graduates in the 2011-12 record breaking class were 10 current and former Buckeye football players including two key players that will be taking the field this fall. Ben Buchanan and Zach Domicone both received their degrees, in strategic communications and marketing, respectively.

Joining them were notable former players Andrew Sweat (Marketing), Nate Ebner (human nutrition), and Super Bowl Champion Jake Ballard (sports and leisure studies).

Speaking of Ballard, just one day after he was released by the New York Giants, the Tight End was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots. Ballard joins a veritable stable of highly regarded players at that position. Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are obviously ahead of Jake on the depth chart due to the injury and surgery, but you can bet that Ballard will be back at it, with something to prove.

In short, Bill Belichick is the biggest troll in the National Football League. Well, second biggest, isn’t that right Commissioner?

Final Thoughts

This may or may not have been “found” outside 37101 Warren Road in Westland, Michigan. Just sayin’
