Empire Pictorial – Meyer Class of 2012

On June 16, 2012 by Grant Edgell

Even after being hired in November, a time period considered quite late in the recruiting game, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was able to close out the class of 2012 with a bang and earn the Buckeyes a group ranked 4th nationally by Rivals.com. But that success didn’t come without controversy.

Soon after taking over in Columbus Meyer was able to convince 4-Star DE Se’von Pittman to flip his commitment from Michigan State and 4-Star OL Kyle Dodson to flip over to the Scarlet and Gray from his earlier verbal commitment to Wisconsin. Sparty’s defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi and Badgers’ head coach Bret Bielema took immediate exception to Meyer’s success.

“Jim Tressel and Mark Dantonio would never call or talk to each other’s commitments,” said Narduzzi, while speaking at a Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club function.

“I can tell you this,” said Bielema. “We at the Big Ten don’t want to be like the SEC—in any way, shape or form.”

Urban’s response to the general boo-hoo’ery of his new peers? Simple. Decisive. Combative, even.

“You’re pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again. Do it a little harder next time.”

For the record, I love Urban Meyer. And so do the kids bending over backwards to get into the Ohio State program to play for him.

“You talk to him for a few minutes and he’s got you hooked,” said four-star defensive tackle Tommy Schutt, who switched his allegiance from Penn State to Ohio State after Meyer arrived. “You want to go play for him.”

Taylor Decker recruited us,” said Meyer. “He called me and said, ‘I want to be a Buckeye.’ Whoa, what are you talking about? … Then his high school coach called us said, He wants to come to Ohio State.”

Taylor Decker committed to The Ohio State University on January 15th – one day after making his official visit.

Twenty-five student-athletes in total committed to Ohio State in the 2013 class, some before Meyer took over and some after. We bring you all twenty-five in pictures. Enjoy.
