The Buckeyes were determined Saturday to start off strong against University of Central Florida (UCF); the defense took the field first and looked solid, holding UCF to three and out, and Miller took the field ready to make a statement.
MILLER STARTS THE SHOW | 9:35 1st
Braxton Miller started the offense off with a successful pass to Philly Brown for 11 yards; right away, the Buckeyes were looking better. A combined effort from Zach Boren, Philly Brown, Carlos Hyde and Braxton Miller set the ball 37 yards from the end zone. After an Ohio State timeout, Miller rushed into the end zone for the first touchdown of the game.
BORTLES TO TUKES | 6:54 2nd
After back-to-back field goals by both teams, the score was 10-3 Buckeyes leading at the beginning of the second quarter. Down by 7, UCF had pushed to the 1 yard line, then quarterback Blake Bortles threw a short pass to Justin Tukes for their first touchdown of the game.
MILLER SETS THE TONE | 0:15 2nd
All tied up, Ohio State’s Boren fumbled the ball, and then two plays later, Bortles’ pass was intercepted by Travis Howard. With the ball back and three minutes left in the half, the Buckeyes drove down the field and finished the way they know best, with Braxton Miller rushing 6 yards for a touchdown with 15 seconds left in the half.
MILLER TO STONEBURNER | 10:25 3rd
The first drive out of the half, the Buckeyes had a good combination of passing and rushing plays; the drive was 12 plays for 76 total yards, 31 rushing and 45 passing. Jake Stoneburner saw red zone action, catching a 12 yard pass from Miller for the Buckeyes third touchdown of the day.
MILLER THE TRIPLE THREAT | 8:08 3rd
Three plays into UCF’s drive, Bortles was picked off by Sabino at the UCF 34, giving Ohio State another chance to score. Braxton Miller rushed for 9 yards, followed by a 15 yard pass to Devin Smith. Only three plays after Sabino’s interception, Miller ran for an 8 yard touchdown, completing his third rushing touchdown of the game. With Carlos Hyde on the sidelines during the second half, Miller picked up some of the slack and stepped up his ground game.
BORTLES TO GIOVANETTI | 1:37 3rd
The score was Buckeyes 31 UCF 10; the Knights took 14 plays and six and a half minutes to finally score their second touchdown of the game toward the end of the third quarter. Bortles threw a 2 yard pass to Billy Giovanetti, but the extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 31-16.
After a fourth quarter filled with interceptions, fumbles and punts, the final score was 31-16, Buckeyes with the W. Braxton Miller was a large majority of the offense, rushing for a total of 141 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 passing touchdown. The Ohio State football team still need’s a lot of work, but it’s encouraging that Coach Urban Meyer isn’t content with just a win; Buckeye nation agrees with Meyer, it’s much more satisfying if we look great while doing it!
