After getting a committment from linebacker prospect Trey Johnson yesterday Ohio State Buckeye fans have reason to rejoice again today as Urban Meyer and company have secured the verbal commitment of outside linebacker prospect Mike Mitchell. He chose the Buckeyes at the nationally televised US Army All American Bowl over Texas A&M and Oregon but also had scholarship offers from the likes of Oklahoma, Florida, and many other top programs.
Mitchell out of Plano, TX is rated a four star recruit by 247, ESPN, and Rivals. Scout has him rated as a five star. He is a redonkulous athlete who is listed on ESPN as being the fastest outside linebacker prospect in the 40 yard dash at 4.45 seconds and the outside linebacker with the highest vertical at 40.3 inches.
During the summer Mitchell went out to Nike headquarters in Oregon to compete against the best high school football players in the country at the camp dubbed The Opening. While there Mitchell competed in the SPARQ competition, which evaluates a players overall athleticism in football specific drills. Mitchell won in a land slide and really burst onto the recruiting scene. There were rumors over the summer that Mitchell was so enamored with Urban Meyer that he was close to committing without even taking a visit to Ohio State.
Also interesting to note is that Mitchell’s brother, Mickey Mitchell, is a top 2015 target of Ohio State Basketball coach Thad Matta. Mickey is a small forward and is listed by ESPN as being the 4th ranked prospect in the class of 2015.
The 6-4/220 pound Mitchell will be looked at to provide immediate help to a young linebacking core looking to replace two starters in Zach Boren and Etienne Sabino. This is a great get for Urban Meyer and the Buckeye coaching staff as it helps fill a spot at a position that left a lot to be desired at times last season.
Stay tuned to The Empire as we will continue to provide you with up to date recruiting news as National Signing day approaches. We are expecting the big things from Urban Meyer and the coaching staff.
