A starter since his first game at Ohio State, John Hicks is the offensive lineman you may not know finished higher than Orlando Pace in his senior year’s Heisman race. After missing his sophomore season with a knee injury, Hicks went on to be an All-American in ’72 and ’73. He finished 2nd in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1973 behind Penn State’s John Cappelletti. It should be noted that his senior year was Archie Griffin’s sophomore year. Archie gained 1577 yards with a 6.4 ypc average during that year, and finished in 5th for the Heisman voting, one place in front of the third fellow Buckeye in the top 6, Randy Gradishar. Hicks was a people mover, and one of the all-time great Ohio State (and college football in general) offensive linemen.
(obviously my favorite)
