Stacey Blunt is not as well-known as many other Ohio State players. He made his way to Columbus by way of an offer to walk on to the football team. Stacey was considered a two-star recruit coming out of high school and did not hold many division one scholarship offers. As a Columbus native, he would have preferred to commit to Ohio State as high school senior but he was instead given the opportunity to attend Air Force on a full scholarship, which he did.
As a walk on, Stacey faced an uphill battle in order to prove himself to the coaching staff. Last season offered Blunt ample opportunity to break out of the shadows and emerge as a play-maker on a Buckeyes team that lacked depth at wide receiver. Unfortunately, he was limited due to a nagging foot injury and was unable to contribute.
Blunt’s window of opportunity is continuing to get smaller and another stellar recruiting class from Urban Meyer could easily close the window completely. It does not appear that Blunt will see the field this season, and with only one more year of eligibility remaining, we may never see him make an impact as a Buckeye.
It’s tough not to feel for someone like Blunt. He had the opportunity to play at other smaller schools and which would have paid his tuition, but he preferred to compete at Ohio State instead, while paying his own way through school. Blunt is currently majoring in accounting and has been recognized as an outstanding student-athlete.
We can only hope that his injury heals completely to the point that he is at least able to compete for some playing time. If things go as planned for Ohio State this season we will see several blow-outs, giving guys like Blunt an opportunity to see the field and make their friends and family proud.
