The Problems are Real (OSU Basketball Article, NSFW)

Basketball season is always a lot different than football when it comes to panicking about a team’s performance, especially when there’s so many games left to be played.  This is not one of those times.

zJXu8oDThe Buckeyes are suffering on both ends of the court the past few games, and when the defense is actually playing well there is almost no conversion to points.  Shooting a pathetic 6 for 21 from behind the arc, and 21 for 53 overall against Nebraska, the Buckeyes seem to more often settling for jump shots late in their possessions rather than driving and getting close buckets.  There has been absolutely no threat to penetrate to the basket beyond Craft and occasionally Scott, who are both having their own possession problems of their own.  It’s almost as if the plays aren’t being drawn up to have LQR or Sam even attempt cuts to the basket with or without the ball besides the occasional lob to Sam.

The defense has been playing well in limiting the opposition’s points, but rarely are steals or well positioned rebounds leading to transition buckets.  More often than not someone is throwing up a layup looking for a foul instead of looking to finish and get an “and 1″ attempt.  This is something we are sorely missing with the departure of Deshaun Thomas, who was big and strong enough to take shots down low and still finish the bucket.  This team looks frail in comparison when down on the block, including Amir, and any contact at all seems to be too much for a strong move to get the points and to get to the line.

Not that getting to the line seems to matter either, as the charity stripe was good for 67%  shooting.  That’s the free throw line, it has the word “free” in it.  Not sure how much time is spent on these in practices, but I’d say maybe a little more is warranted.

I’m not sure what this team needs, but I’d definitely like to see fewer 3s and jumpers in general.  You can’t shoot your way out of a zone defense if you can’t shoot, so it may be time to implement some team rules about when jump shots outside of a certain range are OK.  The paint needs to be utilized, as much higher percentage shots need to be taken.  It’s clear that the effort is there, based on the defense, but this team may need to realize it’s not a jump shooting team.  My first thought: Use LQR like we did Deshaun, he’s 6’8 for God’s sake.
