Darron Lee, of New Albany High School (2-2), is a versatile athlete that will suit up for the Silver Bullet defense. As a 2013 commit, the consensus 3* is part of an excellent recruiting class for Ohio State and Head Coach Urban Meyer. At 6’2 and 205 lbs, Lee has a nice frame that has Buckeye fans and coaches wondering where he’ll line up in the Scarlet & Gray.
Lee plays as the FS and QB for New Albany. He accounted for 6 TD’s last weekend and is an underrated playmaker in this class. Lee will almost definitely line up on the defensive side of the ball for the Buckeyes, but at this point, we’re just not sure where he’ll line up because we’re not sure how big he’ll get. He has the frame to fill out and play LB, but I seem to think he’ll play the Star Position like Jermale Hines and Tyler Moeller while they were on the Silver Bullet squad. A big safety like this can be the mark of an elite defense. I mean, look at Taylor Mays while at USC. The guy was built like a LB and made WR’s hate crossing the middle. I guess the current rules kind of take away that element since all of the receivers crossing the middle are no considered “defenseless”, but that’s a discussion for a different time. The point is that Lee could be a very important piece for the future Buckeye defense.
I had a chance to catch up with Darron, and here’s what he had to say:
JM:To start off, what excites you most about playing for The Ohio State University?
DL: Personally, the level of competition. I’m a competitor, and I want to go against the best every time I strap up. Aside from that, I’m playing with a great group of players and coaches. Coach Meyer was a legend when I was growing up down south, so it’s pretty cool to play for him. Lastly, the chance to be national champions gets me going; but the biggest thing is beating down Michigan for the next 4 years. That will be very enjoyable.
JM: What current Buckeyes have you been able to get to know, and what recruits are you excited to be on the same team with?
DL: I know Nathan Williams pretty well, and I’m starting to get to know Noah Spence too. Recruit-wise, all of them. I think all of the 2013 class is pretty cool. If I have to be specific, I’m excited about the secondary players as well as Joey Bosa, Evan Lisle, and Billy Price.
JM: What’s your favorite part of playing football, and why?
DL: Scoring. It’s going to be a little bit harder since I’ll probably be a defensive guy when I get to OSU; but scoring keeps me going. I rarely go down if the ball is in my hands, and if I’m not down then we score. Scoring is my way of saying “Domination”. The more I score, the better I play throughout the game.
JM: You can still score. Fumbles and picks!
DL: It’s a lot harder though, let’s be honest. Lol.
JM: Who do you want your game to most be like?
DL: That’s tough because I want to create my own type of game. I want to be able to do it all. Stop run, blitz, man up like a corner, and play centerfield like a safety. I want to create my own type of style so that I won’t have many weaknesses, but I want to help the defense in whatever way possible.
JM: Last question, when you think about the Buckeye defense that you will be playing on, what words come to mind?
DL: Shutout. I don’t know why, but I always want to hold opponents to zero points. If not zero, then I only want to allow field goals because I know our offense will score touchdowns. I love shutting people down and having fun while doing it, and I believe with the group of guys coming in that will happen.
This is all for now from the Buckeye Empire Recruiting front. I want to thank Darron for taking the time to chat with me. I can’t wait to watch him in this Buckeye defense.
